Trouble in Blog Land

Big milestone.  I reached my free photo storage limit on Picassa.  I knew I was getting close to the limit, but like Scarlet O'Hara decided I'd think about that tomorrow.  Well, tomorrow came yesterday when blogger refused to allow me to post any more photos.  I don't really want to purchase web storage even if it's really inexpensive because I'm cheap and would rather spend my money on other stuff.
I figured out that images that are sized 800 pixels and smaller don't count against the limit.  So today I'm going to try uploading smaller images.  Not too excited  loosing all those pixels.  So sad.  I guess it will have to do for the time being until I figure something else out.

Has this happened to anyone else?  What did you do to solve the problem?

Here's our contribution to the 2012 art show.  Enjoy!

  1. Hey, Barb, ironically I've been worrying about that too. My percentage of storage used, after creeping slowly for 2 years, suddenly jumped 10% in a day. What's that about? I'm closing in on the end of the line. Shrinking all the pictures sounds like a royal time-consuming pain considering that I post so many photos.

So I don't know a solution but I'm hoping someone else will answer you with a logical answer. All I can guess is perhaps starting a new blog? Or is the amount of photo storage per blogger profile and not per blog? I'm so ignorant about this. And if it's a new blog, how do you migrate all your followers?

How much does it cost for the photo storage when you exceed your limit?

  2. I completely understand that you don't want to have to pay but just so you know it is only $5.00 a year and you most likely will have MORE storage than you will ever use! In Dec. I decided that I wanted to have all my photos backed -up (on "the cloud")so I bit the bullet and paid!

Phyl, I don't think starting another blog will help unless you do it under a different email account. Everything you store with Google uses up your allotment (photos, email, google docs etc). That's how I solved the problem

  3. I also paid the $5 when I went over. I never even knew/thought about a limit until I couldn't post anything. I've also started resizing my images just as a precaution.

  4. Love your art show!
(I didn't know about the limit either, and I've been posting my pictures larger lately! Will have to look into this!)

  5. It's just $5? I'll pay. Resizing or other alternatives seem like too much effort for such a small amount of $$.

  6. I didn't know there was a limit. I'm glad you mentioned this. I am probably getting close to my limit too.

  7. I read on-line (in a couple of different forum)s that Photos uploaded from Picassa3 will be automatically resized to 800 px when the storage limit has been reached. (thought it would save me time resizing everything, but I'm not finding that to be so). When I try to upload from Picassa3 I'm getting an error message concerning storage.
    Anybody know anything about that?
I figured out that I can upload photos that I manually resize in photoshop.

    Any thoughts on this?

  8. I think i've already paid the $5 twice?! And I didn't think I posted any more pictures than the average blog?

Are the pictures you just posted the smaller size ones? Because... when you click on the images, they just enlarge into a slideshow and they look perfectly fine! : )

  9. I am so glad you posted this. Somewhere in the back of my mind it had occurred to me that I might be approaching some sort of limit. I checked -- I am. The $5 option sounds good to me. I am happy to know what to do in advance:))

  10. A second thought. You know when I started taking pix for my blog I had not adjusted the settings on my camera for pc/internet ( I forget the exact term on the camera) so I was using a LOT of pixels for quality I didn't need for internet use. I have since made the adjustment and am not using NEAR the # of pixels per picture -- just a thought for those who are concerned with this issue:))

  11. Is it me? The photo in this post is re sized (800 px) and looks a little off, but I don't notice a difference in quality when I click on the photo to enlarge it. Hmmm.

Remember the old blogger when photos would open in their own window and be huge....I kind of liked that feature, because you could really see what was going on with a piece of art...how it was made, etc.

Any thoughts on switching to Flickr...is that an option? I posted photos there, but they didn't post to my blog.

  12. Hi Barbara.

    Download this program.
You can scale your pictures before importing them to Picasa.

  13. Wow. Very enlightening.

I'm thinking of taking Susan's advice and paying the five bucks. Right now, I have my school pics on the cloud, and my family photos on a hard drive. I like the idea of having everything in one place.

I was wondering about storing my blogger photos on Flickr or Photobucket, but then they'd be all scattered about and I'm not sure I could deal with that.

  14. I spent a little more time on Picasa this morning. My first thought was to resize photos (in their editing program) starting with my earlier ones that were more pixels (cause of my camera settings). I started that process -- boring but easy. Then I re-read the picasa info that says when you reach your limit, they'll just upload photos at the 800 pixel size that is free and doesn't count against our limit. I think I am just going to go that route, as that resolution seems fine for blogging purposes. I am still glad for your alert, as it got me over to Picasa to learn more about it. I have NEVER paid any attention to it at all!!THANKS a bunch!!

  15. Good luck with that Christie--I read that too, and tried, but Picassa did not automatically resize for me. Instead it gave me an error message and refused to load anything.

I'll try again after deleting some photos and see what happens.

  16. i just ran into this same problem today. picasa didn't resize the photos automatically. Looking at the pricing it it seems like for 25 gb of storage its $2.50 per month, which isn't alot, but will definitely add up over the long haul...
