Story Stones

I made up this set of story stones this weekend.  They were a lot of fun to make.  I envisioned a small set, but ended up with all of these.  I got a little carried away, because they were so much fun to make. I made them with Sharpie Marker.
The stones are supposed to be used as a story prompt, but I think I'll use them as a drawing prompt.
My plan is to tie up a few stones in a piece of colorful cloth.  Kids can choose a bundle, untie it, and make up a picture based on their stones.  I think there are enough for a whole class if the children partner-up. Could be a fun sub-plan, too.
What do you think?  How would you use them?

  1. Great idea. I used to keep a bucket of 'story starters' in my classroom. They were laminated strips of paper that said things like 'inside the jellybean factory' or 'the vegetables rock-n-roll band' or 'professor Fleegle and the mysterious science experiment' - you get the idea.

The kids liked them as I'm sure they will your story stones, with one problem. They seemed to rush through one so they could pick another, rather than really settling into the artwork. I had to set time rules so they didn't say 'I'm done!' Too quickly.

I hope you'll share the resulting artwork! By the way, where did you find such white stones, or did you prime them ?

  2. Love the idea! I have a lot of "quick draw" artists this semester who finish early. This might be a fun project for them. :D

  4. These are fantastic! You could totally use these for early finishers or just a fun project! I think it would be interesting for students to come up with their own to trade with classmates. Think of how many stories could be made :)

  5. I'm definitely heading to the dollar store for stones today, these are terrific. Where did you get your ideas for what you drew on the stones?

  6. What a Super idea! Thanks for sharing. I can see I will also get carried away in making the stones. I'm thinking I could use this in our Sunday School. I could make some story stones to prompt the kids' memories as well as have the kids make stones to remind them of different stories/lessons. thanks again!
